Nebula Playtime by dinyctis Nebula Playtime by dinyctis
This started with Red Nebula. I played around with it trying to take it further and see what else I could make of it. An exercise of technique, basically. These are some results.

The top 2 are just different in color, no stars. I left them like that so that you can see and study the details. You might notice some fractal action at the top right of the nebula. The original was pretty red, so this was some experimentation with a different color palette.

At the bottom, you can see a finished product with stars.

How was this made? Hmm, an assload of layers, lots of brushing, and lots of smudging with textured brushes.

You might notice that they are a bit noisy (texture). I added that on purpose. Adding some noise will make them look more like telescope photographs and get rid of a hell of a lot of the CG-look that often times makes them look fake. Remember, I was trying to go for photographic realism here.

Nice. I need to find a tutorial to make good nebulas that weren't made for Photoshop 7.

Why? Do a lot of the steps just not work with the CS versions? I made my planet tutorial with photoshop 7 and people are still following it with the newer versions

I just find that some of the effects have different, well, effects. Some of the blending modes act a bit differently, and a couple other things seem to have been moved. I'm just complaining, really, I could stand to experiment and figure out how to make it work :P

I never encountered that. I have CS2 at home and CS3 at work and I never gave much thought to effects working differently. Now I'm gonna be on the lookout =P

Loving the painted quality to this neb. Really does look like it was done in a traditional medium. Interesting you bring up the noise issue: that CG look as you so put it is definitely apparent in a hell of alot of work. Take a look at [link] for a similar technique to yours here.

The thing I like about these nebs is the scale. They seem believable in the combo of ambience and colour also. I'd perhaps be inclined to have played with the stars further, to help emphasise particular shapes within the gases.

Couldnt agree more. The stars were a single layer at the point that I just threw in there without much thought. On finished pieces (posters, etc), I normally place them very carefully in clusters around gas sections, etc. On this one, it was more to see how stars change the entire thing and makes the brushing a lot less apparent. :)

Heh, funny you mention that. Am working on a neb atm, and I started with a generic star layer over the whole thing. Quite a while into it i turned that layer on and was surprised to see how much the stars actually hide; sloppy brush work in my case ;)

I always start a space scene with empty space. Literally! Just black and a generic star background that I made. I find it as a good base. Of course, none of that is left by the time I'm done. Though I havent made a space scene in ages =P

Yeh I start the same way, hence why I decided to mix it up a tad this time! Yeh, you ain't heh, but your journal from ages ago now covers that ;) Still, you haven't updated your journal in a while! Am guessing thats why you get comments along the lines of "And glad to see you are back."

Yea, it's just that when design is your job, firing up photoshop at home is a bit weird. I have a few ideas around but I always end up deviating from them. All it takes is for them to build up and push me to make something, hehe. I have a few things that I'd like to explore, mainly with the idea of space travel and colonization. "Vessel" was one of my latest and still one of my favorite works, so I'm brewing some visual ideas that I'd like to work with. Time will tell :)
