iMac G4 Lamp by dinyctis iMac G4 Lamp by dinyctis
At work, we had this old iMac G4 that was retired some time ago and was ready to be taken to storage. Of course, "storage" means "get it the hell outta here but we wont feel bad about actually throwing it out."

Being that the average smartphone is more powerful than this thing nowaways, it wasn't gonna be very useful. I remember coming across a few projects that turned one of these into a lamp and I figured that I'd give it a shot. I hada few ideas and my father had the technical skill-set (and equipment) to pull it off.

So, after some weeks of tinkering and playing around, this is the result. Granted, the only original parts are the disc on the base, the "shade," and the chromed arm. Everything else was machined or fabricated out of aluminum or walnut and put together.

So, the computer that was going to be sent away to storage is now lighting up our lobby.

Really awesomely done! I think I'll leave my iMac G4 as it is though. ;-)

Where did you get the metal piece that attaches to the iMac arm?

Amazing work.

Thank you! You mean the one that connects the original monitor neck to the "lamp" head? That's custom made as well as every other metal piece :)

I have an iMac G4 that I took apart. How much would you charge to me me a lamp out of it? Thanks

Hi Jim,

A lot, actually. My father and I figured out how much it would be to put another one together if somebody wanted and materials and time would drive the price slightly north of $500.

It moved. Gorgeous. Flawless. I can fawn some more if you'd like. Seriously, send this to Apple because there is a ready made market for it. [link]

I want one ! :)
No kidding, this piece is awesome. You should send this to recyclart.org, for example.

Thanks!

I don't think this would apply for recyclart, though. Most of this lamp was either fabricated or made new, so not much for recycling in that department.

Looks amazing! I'd want a lamp like that, die-hard Apple-fan that I am.

Cracking it open, it was very nice to see indeed (even with all the dust bunnies). The mechanical design of the chromed arm, though, was very nice to see, also.

I can't express how awesome I find this. It looks so professionally done -- I'd definitely buy something like this! I also like the original twist with the wooden base. The whole thing is just really gorgeous. :)

I'd have to say this is pretty awesome. I don't think many people actually look at old electronics and think they are useful beyond doing what they were initially intended to do. Just awesome to see someone recycle in a useful, practical and creative way!

To be fair, I just took the shell and the good-looking bits. The electronics inside were disposed of, as well as the dust bunnies =P

Ah! All the same ;) Still less that goes to a landfill, and in my opinion, even that is more than nothing!

Still a snazzy lamp, something to be proud of :D

Fantastic work!
Was it intentional that you used an old light bulb or can you upgrade to a new one?
Because that's very Apple-y

Thanks! I can use any light bulb that I want. However, this one is short enough to not be seen directly from the side. I wanted to use the new ones (pig tails) but they were too long and poked through the shade part. Plus this is hooked up to a dimmer, so I can vary the brightness (unlike the new ones that have ballasts).

I can imagine. It'll seem ironic to many that I'm no Apple fanboy, though. Say what you want about Apple, though, but their industrial design is pretty cool.

As I indicated before, their components might
not be the latest tech, but their design and usability
definitely is. Just like your lamp. Perfect hommage.
