Salutations!

2 min read
Due to reasons that are foreign to me, a tutorial that I wrote in September of 2003 is now on the front page of the website in February of 2017.  What a pleasant surprise! I'm glad to see that this is still being of some use after all this time and that Photoshop hasn't changed all that much.  Since that will mean people flocking to this page, I wanted to write a little message:

Welcome! I hope that you like what you see.  It is a glimpse of what I created many many years ago.  The lack of activity does not represent a lack of interest in art.  Design/art is what I do for a living, so I do not do it as much of a hobby anymore.  Let me tell you that this is not a bummer by any means. Be that as it may, the door is never closed.  And speaking of open doors, feel free to ask any questions that you may have!

Most people around here will be new to me, but I do hold fond memories of the people with whom I interacted frequently throughout the years.  You know who you are and I hope you're doing just as well.

Regards,
-Cristian

I was watching the movie "Another Earth" when I noticed something familiar.  To be more specific, artwork that looked like something I made a few years ago. I used the word "familiar" very loosely, because I'd recognize something that I made anywhere from very few details.

At the 17 minute mark of the movie, the main character goes on a website to write a small essay for a contest.  Guess what artwork is used as part of the background of that website? This: fav.me/d18g5o

It's just rotated, but it's exactly the same! The flare has the same angles and the Earth is showing the exact same position.  I made that in 3D, meaning that I had complete freedom of rotating the planet when I chose that angle.  The possibility of it being a coincidence are, well, astronomical.

I can't really say much because, even though I made that, it was using artwork from NASA.  But, even if I were able to make a ruckus, I'm not sure if I would.  I'm not bitter about it (like other times in which I've been).  It's something new to me and I'm just sorting it out.  I'm far more curious and satisfied than upset and bitter.

Given that a lot of people do artwork like this and many of you read this, how would you feel if one of your pieces was used in a minor part of a movie?

Oh, and to add to the curiosity: The scene is at the 17 minute mark of the DVD's 5th chapter.  My birth date is on the 17th day of the 5th month.  Ding! :diny:

EDIT: Since I can't take screenshots from my PS3's Blu-Ray, I had to take a picture of it, much like kids did in the 90s to show their video game high scores

Over the years, I've been getting requests from some people about having a few of the designs that I've made available as shirts.  I always thought it was "one of those things" where it could be much more effort than it was worth.  However, as selfishly as this might be, I've just made a few personal designs that I'd like to have made as shirts.  As such, I could make a few of the designs available including some new ones.

However, I could use some guidance in choosing a service.  I figured that the art community (and hopefully a few of the people who will stumble upon this entry) will have a better idea than me (which is none!)  One with some sort of storefront would be nice.  Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Thank you, CNN

Thank you, CNN, for you have made me chuckle.  When I see things like these, I can't help to think that someone realized it and made it happen (or made it more obvious).  What am I referring to?

THIS

I'd normally just leave it at that.  However, 5 years after posting my Grammar Natzee poster, people still tell me that I misspelled the word Nazi.  So as a service to those people:

One line mentions Kelsey Grammer, which has a last name that is the word Grammar misspelled.  And, on the next line...they mention Spelling.

I mean, it's not that big of a stretch, is it? It's not Glenn Beck-ish, right?  It is awesome in every way!

I've always been interested in how people handle the same situation differently and the motives behind their attitudes, so it's no wonder that I ask lots of these questions. Yes, it depends on the situation, but this one has a more general approach. And it goes like this.

"So Cristian (my real name), I notice that you have an accent.  I can't quite figure it out"

"Ah yes, I'm from Argentina."

"Oh! So you speak Spanish?"

"Yes"

Yes, anyone who is bilingual has been in this position (save for the country and language specifics).  However, your answer to the last question is where my curiosity arises.  In this example, I said "yes" instead of "si."  Now, most would just leave it at that, but I'm an intellectual molerat that likes to dig into every idea down to the core.  So, here's the deal:

A lot of times, after saying "yes," I get an odd feeling from the person asking the question.  Do they think I'm full of shit? Are they disappointed because they wanted to hear me say a phrase in Spanish? Who knows. After a brief pause, the conversation moves on without a hitch.

Alternatively, it could've played out like this:

"Oh! So you speak Spanish?"

"Si!"

Now, this is so cheesy! Come on! Especially if you stretch it (Siiiii!)

So what's your take on this clearly crucial social subject matter?
